Give Yourself a Compliment

Let’s be honest with each other for a moment. Can you give yourself a compliment and mean it?

It’s entirely too easy these days to take outside compliments from our friends and family with stride because we don’t have to truly internalize the nice words. We don’t to think they’re real. But when those kind of comments from within and it’s not just a feel-good platitude that is read off a post-it on a mirror, it resonates. To some, it feels weird. But there’s a certain sort of magic when that happens. And it’s a spell that can shape your entire day if you let it.

That’s why I like things like this on social media where a trend comes along that forces us to really look at ourselves and not the mask that we wear. In this video I’m following the idea where you look at a cartoonish caricature of your own face for a few seconds then you remove the filter, seeing your unstretched features and then you give yourself a compliment.

As you can see, I found a feature of my face that I’ve never really given their due and I felt a small flicker of magic flow through me when I did.

It’s really helpful, I promise you, to be nice to yourself. Because that in turn sets you up to be nice to others. Then, wouldn’t you know it, we’re in a nicer world all around.
